The long awaited (4 days) Tortoise review   February 11.
Yes, for those of you who have been checking these reviews since the beginning of this site, you'll probably think that I don't have anything better to do but write reviews for various incongruous items, linked only by the fact that I have used them in one way or another. Whateva whateva. it's pretty fun to post all this stuff that no one will ever read. Hmm, maybe I should go on the internet and find out the name of this album, but by that reasoning, you could do that too, reader. Sorry for the all time low customer satisfaction, but you aren't paying anything and I'm not getting paid anything. After that exciting lesson in internet economics and why you shouldn't trust just any site, here is my Tortoise- the new album- review. ********editor's note, I did check the net. The album's name is Standards. Interestingly enough, even though this is a 40-some long minute album, it is classified as a single. Whatever. T-R-ivial.
Right now I am listening to track7- Monica. It's pretty cool. What I like about these guys is that they actually play instruments. This in itself isn't a feat, but within the genre in which Tortoise could be classified, experimental electronica or Intelligent Electronic blah blah blah ( It's called post-rock. Isn't that cute all you post modern heads), it doesn't seem like it is common for the bands to actually play instruments, they just sample or cook up beats and tunes on a simulator. For eveyr track I could say, "The flow is excellent, throughout most of the album, Tortoise sticks with a 4/4 timetable. This is ambient rock with experimental and digital twists. There is alot of what sounds like very virtuosic jamming." Maybe I'll stick with that because I am way too lazy to give you a play by play on what is actually going on somg by song.
The members of Tortoise are Doug McCombs, Johnny Herndon, John McEntire, Don Bitney, Jeff Parker and their sound man Casey Rice. Do you know that this band rules?
This album has been officially available, from what I've seen on the internet for just a couple of weeks or only since Feb. Regardless, I have had this album for 4 weeks now and it has been my favorite during this period.
My recommendation is that you go on napster  and check out some of their songs. Maybe you should try Eros, Six Pack, Monica or Speakeasy, but really, the album is perfect in its entirety.
Much Love, jer

Short review #3: the R-J Premier snow skate from CCS
This thing sucks. I thought that it would be cool if it had trucks and skis on it. Ironically enough, a week later while watching the X games, I saw Tony Hawk and some boarders riding snow skates with a fat ski atached to it by trucks. Looks like fun. It's probably stupid. Hawk did some wack pop shuv-it. No one was trying hard flips. I don't know nothing about those good ones though. Emmery from Freewheelin' is making snow skates so I heard, check 'em out, he must be a good craftsman, after all, he rides a 180cm board. But if you're not in Calgary, beware. This is a public service announcement. Do NOT buy one of those cheap plastic R-J Premier snow skates from CCS. If you're going to do that, you might as well give your money to me, at least I'll say nice things to you. I can make you happy

Review #2: Winter XXX Snowboard Coverage. 3:42 am, Feb8
Alright, well here I am, with a golden prognosis of the Winter X games. Whenever someome writes an article on the X Games, he always asks, "does anyone really care about the X Games?" (Transworld). I will not ask that question, except for in the quoted form above, dammit! By now it is completely obvious. 'X-treme' sports have fallen prey into the jaws of the coporate wolverines that used to make us shudder when we thought about them. But, Everyone's gotten over that now. After all, more coverage is more money for the pros, better research and equipment for everyone, and we get to watch the annual X Games h-o-e-ing of our so called 'X' sports. Whatever, you all know this, we all accept this. Even though Suzie whoever and the bald guy with the insane accent that does not make one bit of consistent sense (with his austro-NY-soft/man/girl inflections) drive us nuts with their ludicrous overstating of 'cool' (actually, let's make that 'X')jargon and exploitation of riders for their professional advancement, the bottom line is that we get to watch some pretty good riding on the tube instead of the Young and the Restless or Dawson's Creek. And what about Chris Ernst? yo, that MC is 'whoa'.
What was cool about the games (no more X will be tolerated) was that I haven't watched any riding lately. Furthermore, I have never seen the winter _ Games before. The whole x perience was enlightening. Ross Powers, if you didn't catch it in the olympics or at the COP qualifiers back in 90 something, rides like an early nineties video game. Did you notice that he spins himself exactly the same way that the skater in 'Skate or Die' spins in the pipe? That is some seriously ugly action. If you didn't see Dan Kass' runs then you have seriously missed out on some ill riding. He pulled some 12"+ melon to fakie in his first run that was pretty intense. hmm. is it just me or are inverted 9's starting to be stock? That is a cool looking trick.
My personal highlight was to finally get a chance to see Mike Charles Michalchuck ride the 'super' pipe (must everything be qualified by a boring, lame, exaggerated, meaningless, crude yet enticing adjective?). If you take his name to the logical x treme, it is Micheal Chuck Michalchuck. That is almost as cool as Alex Jackson's real name being Micheal. Anyway, Mike is the only reason why I even bothered tuning in to the X's this year so I better talk about him some more. You know Mike, I still have your phone # memorized form when I played guns with Paul and when we used to go to skateparks, you, on that crazy scooter, riding the 12" vert ramp. Damn funny. They've been showing reruns of snowboarding all week and everytime I tuned in you were falling. Finally tonight, I tuned in for the whole show and got to see the elusive 3rd and final run. I am proud of Mike. The Michalchuck and the double backflip  was super 'whoa'. I'm sure you did other stuff, but I have been brainwashed by the 9 replays of that backflip. Bummer that you only scored 87.87, but you that must have been fourth or fifth place. At any rate, Micheal-Chuck Michalchuck made it worth my while to watch the Xest games of them all. Oh yeah! the bonus of getting to see Mike's parents was pretty cool too! That was a pretty serious montage/story thing on you Mike, sorry guy.
Shuan Plamer, 'palm' won a gold with the Japanese skier guy Tanakesa. I don't care what anyone says, the skiers are way more X when it comes to board/ski X. Oksanen took first in big air. I hophe wasn't the one-footed backflipper, even though that was X. Dude Dan Kass scored a 95.33 in pipe. You know how close that is to a perfect score? X tremely close. Here's a nasty thought that will leave you wondering why; Ross Powers scored a bronze in pipe for his 'skate or die' imitation. pththrlrlrleh (that's some X onomatopeia).
Maybe I can sleep now, I have physio in 4 hours. I guess I have snowboarding to thank for that!

              eMachines eTower600 review                February 5, 2001

As of  you may perhaps know, I recently acquired an Emachines 600Etower computer.
This baby way on special @ the future shop for a nice, everyday low price. As the story goes, I was in need of a new computer so that I could write my thesis on Neitzsche, Michel Foucault, Islam, Christianity and anything else completely non related. Ultimately I did not write the thesis, not because I am a wimp and am afraid of commitment or failure, but for other reasons which, I suppose, I might as well explain right here and now.
Many of you will know that I have had a scarring history of shoulder dislocations, due to the dam-ned sport of snowboarding, for those who are familiar with the affliction, I am a victim of the anterior dislocation.. 6 years ago I had my ligaments shortened in order to stop these dislocations from further plaguing my life. The surgery held for 6 years, but this summer, when I was in Italy (maybe this should've been an editorial), I popped out my shoulder as I was diving into the Mediterranean Sea. That situation is a story in itself. After 3 doctors manhandled me for a minute of two, I was actually green with pain and crying for some  painkillers. After the administration of the narcotics, I was much releived and the arm relocated quite nicely. Since then, my shoulder had popped out through ping pong as well as the vigorous activity of pointing while in a canoe in my underwear. On the underwear occaision, I had to be dressed by all my schoolmates who, like me, conveniently enough, were at a school orientation party at Loon Bay. As you could probably guess, surgery was due. After not being able to take advantage of New Brunswick's fine health care offerings (before may 2001), my dad was able to get emergency surgery in Calgary over Christmas holidays. He "inadvertently" (my dad's claim) used his status as a doctor to get in on the 'in' with the surgeon, Dr. Motahdi.. The problem was that I was trying to write a thesis and, since I had already missed a fair chunk of my writing time while "healing" (or decrepitating) in a sling, I was wondering how I could possibly write my thesis anymore. Enter the Etower 600.
My dad, seeing my need, recalled an ad he had seen, offering an 600MHz Emachine for  $599.99 (after mail-in rebate, of course). Being the incredible guy that he is, he offered to get it for me. The reasoning behind this purchase was that by throwing out my 486, and replacing it with a celeron 600, I could use a voice recognition program to complete my already begun thesis. The computer was pretty cool, but only had 32 MB RAM. After upgrading the RAM to 159 MB, I was ready for business. Once I arrived in St. Stephen, full of thecal writing gusto, I met obstacle after glitch after pain. 2 and a half weekds into the already stressful term, I had an epiphany. Quit the cursed thesis!  You see, my school gives the exact same amount of credit for the thesis as they do for taking a full course load, after all, it is only a BA program.. I was having a more and more difficult time justifying my pains and toils incurred while crying over the thesis, until finally I came to rest in the resolution to not write my paper of crowning glory. Life has been pretty cool since.
Today I found out how to defrag my computer from Jon, things are running in ship shape..

One complaint I have of the computer is that the thing is so cheap that the soundcard is built into the motherboard, thus denying any chance of an  upgrades. Another pain is that I have a Celeron or as uncle Greg calls it, "a crippled Pentium". Another downfall is that Emachines are set up to be Internet friendly to netilliterate people who have no clue. My problem with this is that the keyboard has about 20 different stupid prompt buttons that, quite frankly are a little embarassing. ME sucks? well, I got that too! Sun Office, the word processor boots up super slow, but after that is a pretty good rip off of Windows. All complaints aside, for 600 bucks, I scored big time! I am eternally grateful that my dad rescued me out of the dark ages of computerdom. Even if the eMachines (oh yeah, that's how you write eMa...) is for tech losers, like I am trying not to be, it is still a fairly competent unit. Plus it's got more steering and brake power than any other 'puter in its class.    I love you DAD
